Japanese information technology and electronics major NEC Corporation has reportedly announced that Asia Direct Cable (ADC) Consortium is planning to build a new submarine cable system that intends to connect China, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The proposed ADC cable system has a length of 9,400 km and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2022.

Atsushi Kuwahara, the General Manager of Submarine Network Division of NEC Corporation, has stated that NEC’s prime focus is to support the development of critical infrastructure in the Asian region. He has also stated that the upcoming advanced optical fiber system will aim to provide seamless connectivity to the countries within the Asia-Pacific purview.

For the uninitiated, ADC Consortium is a global association comprised of leading communications and technology corporations including China Unicom, Singtel, CAT, SoftBank Corporation, China Telecom, Tata Communications, PLDT Inc., and Viettel.

According to Chang Weigou, ADC Co-chair, China Telecom, ADC Consortium’s new submarine cable system will provide the highest capacity and necessary diversity beneficial to Asia’s major information hubs. He has also claimed that the project will enable service providers in the region to plan their services and networks in accordance with the sustainable development agenda.

As per sources, the ADC Cable system has been designed to carry more than 140 Tbps of traffic allowing high capacity data transmission across the East and Southeast Asian regions. The cable also has the capability to support bandwidth-intensive applications powered by technological advancements in the areas of Internet-of-Things, 5G, Cloud, and Artificial Intelligence.

According to Koji Ishii, the ADC Co-chair of Softbank Corporation, the cable system focuses on contributing to the business growth in ICT as one of the crucial infrastructures in the Asian region. He has also acknowledged NEC Corporation to have successfully provided many trans-Asian submarine cable systems which has made it the most definitive choice as ADC’s supply partner.
