California-based GeoOptics, Inc., has recently created a new data processing solution, dubbed GeoOptics Processor for Radio Occultation (GeoPRO), to enhance the weather data accuracy from its radio occultation satellite constellation, Cellular Earth Remote Observation (CICERO). The latest system from GeoOptics is developed to solve an inherent obstacle in using radio occultation data.
Occasionally, two signals coursing through the atmosphere meet a receiver at identical times. Commenting on which, Alex Saltman, Chief Operating Officer, GeoOptics, said that these two signals need to be separated in order to avoid false readings.
For a thorough scientific analysis, researchers from time to time solve this issue with the help of phase-matching, which comprises of comprehensive processing of information spanning across different points in the atmosphere. However, a decade ago, phase matching was considered a time-consuming process as it took forever to get applied to timely weather data.
As the lockdown orders and coronavirus epidemic make it tough for GeoOptics staff to continue constructing satellites, the company was able to solve the software hurdle pertaining to phase-matching.
GeoPRO can expedite phase matching by leveraging the abilities of cloud-computing to execute calculations in parallel. In fact, the company is sharing information from the latest processing platform with commercial data customers and scientists.
Moreover, due to the quality of the Cion receiver and the precision of data processing, the incoming data shows bizarrely low bias even in a warm air setting near the surface of the Earth, where minimal quality radio occultation data usually faces uncontrolled biases.
Research has also revealed that this amount of precision in the lower atmosphere could play a crucial role in forecasting high-impact weather events like hurricanes.
As a part of its Commercial Weather Data Pilot, GeoOptics transmits radio occultation data to the Atmospheric Administration and National Oceanic. While its satellites have Global Navigation Satellite Solution Radio Occultation sensors, which the company built with Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
