Collective inclination towards meat alternatives across the globe has compelled various companies to sign strategic alliances to capitalize on the growing trend. To that effect, United Airlines has reportedly teamed up with Impossible Foods to provide plant-based meals during flights.

The Impossible Meatball bowls will be offered in the first-class menu for domestic flights that are traveling around 800 miles in the United States, cited sources with knowledge of the matter. Even some airport lounges in Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark, and San Francisco will begin offering Impossible plant-based sausage in breakfast buffets.

The Managing Director of Hospitality and Planning at United Airlines Aaron McMillan was quoted saying that the airline intends to offer food that changes with people’s preferences. The quality of food choices in airports as well as in airlines play a critical role in customer experience, he added.

Even Delta Airlines recently joined hands with Impossible Foods to bring vegan and vegetarian options to its menu. In this context, Senior VP of In-Flight Service at Delta Kristen Manion Taylor claimed that plant-based foods are known to be better for the environment. The reworked menu reflects Delta’s ambition to encourage a wellness-focused travel journey.

Other airline companies such as Aegean, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Air New Zealand have started offering plant-based options on their menus. For instance, Air New Zealand offered the Impossible Burger to business class customers on flights between Los Angeles and Auckland.

Emirates too has claimed that vegan options are the third most requested items in the economy class. From these developments, it appears that plant-based foods are gaining significant popularity across various industry verticals and countries.

It would be interesting to see how plant-based food items revolutionizes air travel and how it impacts the overall customer experience.
